Summer is over, school has started, and Book Trust has come to the Lake Pend Oreille School District. We are excited to have their program in our community and hope to see it grow over the next few years.
Book Trust’s mission is to uniquely deliver choice and ownership of books to children from low-income families, increasing their literacy skills and fostering life-long learning.
Book Trust will empower children to choose and own books of interest each month of the school year. This results in children building a personal library of 18-20 books over the course of the year. For many students, these books may become the first books they own. Building a personal library helps instill a culture of literacy in some of the neediest homes in the community.
Book Trust also instills a culture of literacy in the classroom. The program supports teachers in the development of their students’ literacy skills. Research demonstrates that when kids have books they want to read, they read more. The more they read, the better readers they become.
Finally, Book Trust helps teachers build classroom libraries. Participating classroom teachers earn Scholastic bonus points that can be redeemed for additional classroom books, materials or teaching supplies, a benefit for all teachers.
Book Trust helps kids fall in love with reading:
- Choice: students preview books before making selections.
- Life Skills: students build basic budgeting skills as they learn to manage their purchases within a monthly allotment of $7.
- Sharing: students can read with friends who chose the same books, discuss the books they are reading in the classroom and at home.
- Ownership: students build a personal library over the course of the school year, instilling a culture of literacy in the classroom and the home.
- Family Engagement: provides increased opportunity for parents and siblings to read together given new access to books.
